I need a solution

Hello,

I have a single HP Tape LIbrary with LTO4 tape drive and a robot.

I wanted to use this for normal backups and also NDMP backups.

We dont have SSO licensed.

Is that possible to use for NDMP and other backups at the same time.

Netbackup 7.5 is successfully running on all clients but on one server, it shows the process is at 100% but I do not find any data backed up. Back up complete within 2 mins of running with 100%.

Replication Director

I need a solution

I am looking to see if a core workflow of my backup environment can be configured in Replication Director.

Environment components:

  • Multiple Netapp filers (6280s OnTap 8.x in 7mode)
  • One Netbackup master server (Windows 2003)
  • Two Netbackup media servers (one Windows 2003 and one OLE 6)
  • LTO4 tape drives in a robotic library

Current situation:

On the primary filer I take hourly snapshots of a volume and retain them for a rolling 24; a daily snapshot is taken and retained for rolling 7 days. Nightly; I snapvault a daily snapshot to a secondary filer and keep that for 5 weeks. On a weekly schedule I backup the volume on this secondary filer to tape.

This solution is managed by many tools and there is not central console to monitor and report the end to end successes (or failures, let’s be honest). Replication Director seems to be the tool for this. Can I use it to achieve my desired result?

Desired result:

  1. Netbackup schedules and initiates the hourly and daily snapshots on the primary storage volume.
  2. Netbackup schedules and initiates the snapvault to the secondary volume on another filer nightly.
  3. Netbackup schedules and executes tape backups of the secondary volume weekly to tape.

Man that sounds like a dream come true.

Thank you in adavance interwebs for any input you offer,

Joel Delaney

VADP backup of NASDatastores

I need a solution

Please corrcet me if I am wrong, I understand that until now, VADP supports only FC and iSCSI for "SAN" transport.

to backup NASDatastores one must use NBD or Hotadd transport.

Is there a roadmap to support NFS mounted (on a 5220 Appliance) VADP ?

nbauditreport question

I need a solution

Hello,

I use NetBackup EnterpriseServer 7.5.0.5 on Oracle Enterprise Linux 6.3. I configured a linux user (joe).

I added the rights of joe to auth.conf:

joe ADMIN=ALL JBP=ALL

I loged as joe and ran jnbSA and logged in.

After I changed a policy status from active to deactive.

When I run nbauditreport command I saw the following:

TIMESTAMP            USER               DESCRIPTION

03/11/2013 10:43:33 root@master     Policy 'test-fs' was deactivated

My question is why I can not see the joe user in this report why I see root in every case instead of other users (e.g. joe)?

If I would like to see the correct user name I should use NBAC?

Thank you in advance!

I need a solution

Hi,

I just installed one SAN Media server on platform (RHEL6.1) with nbu version 7.5. I upgrade it with patch 7.5.0.4 . After done with the installation, I am able to ping and telnet using bpcd port to my master server.

The problem is, I am not able to telnet my SAN Media Server from my Master Server. I only can ping it from my Master Server.

I have done the bptestbpcd  from both sites, also bpclntcmd.I already check the bp.conf, the /etc/hosts file. Anyone has idea what should I check to make sure the communication is fixed?

Vault - Disk to Tape

I need a solution

Hi Guys. me again. I am backing up to disk. I am using vault to write from my disk backup to tape. Attached is the vault summary. It seems to me that vault is writing only 1 or 2 images to most of the tapes. The tapes are DLT 1.6 TB. I see that the images are less than 1 TB on most of the tapes. This is causing the backups to be written to 26 tapes. How can I configure vault to fill one tape before moving on to the next tape.

NetBackup VMware Snapshot fail due to SLES Proxy Settings

$

I need a solution

Good afternoon,

I was wondering if someone could help me with this weird behavior, which is only partially related to NetBackup.

NetBackup for VMware snapshots failed with status 40. They worked just fine the other day. Snapshots that would else be finished within 20 second now took up to half an hour before failing. Every now and then a snapshot would succeed. But the majority of the VMware backup jobs failed.

Of course nobody changed anything.

After an extensive and not particularly successful troubleshooting session my customer finally happened to remember that he had indeed changed a little something. He had added a proxy server to in the SLES system configuration.

Now, the problem lies in the way NetBackup handles it’s communication with the virtual center server _and_ in the way SLES uses it’s proxy server’s whitelist.

Let’s say, we have a whitelist containing two entries:
 - vcenter01.customer.de
 - vcenter01

Checking with “wget” we see that connections to the FQDN (vcenter01.customer.de) bypass the proxy server, while connections to the short name (vcenter01) will always be routed through the proxy.

Obviously at some point in the snapshot creation process NetBackup uses the short name and gets stuck with the proxy server. A reverse lookup of the vcenter IP only returns the FQDN. So that would be no starting point for a workaround.

Could anyone think of a solution for this dilemma?

Many thanks,
Thomas

Problem doing a restore with a tape from another library.

Ok, so here is the situation.

My envirironment is like this:

1 master server - 1 tape library

1 media server in a remote location - 1 tape library

1 media server in another remote location - 1 storage unit

Now, I took a tape from my media server and inserted it in the library attached to my master server.

When I try to do a restore, it will not process the tape. I get the following:

11/03/2013 01:00:52 p.m. - Info bpbrm(pid=7352) start tar32 on client

Not sure if it is still trying to fetch the tape in the media server or what, but I am pretty stuck in here.
Any ideas?

All,

We are currently using the HP-UX 11.31 IA64 as our NBU master platform. But we have heard Symantec is going to stop HP-UX support as master soon. We are thinking to move our master to Linux or even Windows 2008. What is your recommation according to your experience? I perfer RHEL if it is solid with Netbackup.

thanks in advance!

NBU 7.1

Have a duplication from SLP that keeps coming back.  I've tried various nbstutil commands (cancel, inactive, etc) from master and media.  Nothing fixes it.  Same problem occured in January.  Can't find the command I used then to kill it.  I'd rather not bring down the services to fix the problem.

I need a solution

I want to upgrade to NBU 7.5 from NBU 7.1.0.4. I downloaded the upgrade files Netbackup_7.5_Win_zip.1of2 and Netbackup_7.5_Win.zip.2of2. I also downloaded Netbackup_75_Upgrade_Guide.pdf. I am still at a loss of how to migrate. The guide just talks about the metadata upgrade. Can anyone give me step by step instructions on how to upgrade? Also I assumed the upgrade files were .zip files. I renamed them to Netbackup_7.5_Win_1.zip and Netbackup_7.5_Win_2.zip but I could not open the files. What am I doing wrong?

I need a solution

Hi,

I'm splitting my Monhtly pool into 2 different ones.

If I change the Volume Pool name for the current one will it change the name in the netbackup db as well?

So all current backups will be found if I need to restore?

Or if I need to restore the catalog.

Hi Everyone,

I desperately need your help! I'm fairly new to NBU and was given a task to solve something right away.

We have NBU 7.5 that weekly backs up Hyper-V hosts, but ends up on status code 156. In bpfis log, it exits with error 1542, as shown below:

It was working fine before. No change in the policy nor in the environment. I read some posts here and tried a few suggestions as well:

- we've got enough disk space
- VSS service restarted properly
- bpfis query shows no snapshots
- deleted all shadows left(vssadmin list shadows)
- vssadmin list writers:

C:\Users\Administrator>vssadmin list writers

vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool
