Below are the Rman error logs.

Hi
I've restored successfully from archive some data to a NetApp location (working with NDMP) and noticed that a file called "restore_symboltable" was created with owner root: -rw------- 1 root root 30072832 Feb 21 18:20 restore_symboltable
Any idea what this file might be and do I need it ? I've done many restores overs the years and never seen this file.
Thanks
Hi All,
We are running Netbackup version 7.5.0.4 and are planning to introduce dedup in our environment .We are also doing Vmware blib backups and will be testing dedup on them first .We are backing up around 500+ vm machines using Vstorage api on vsphere 5.0 .
We have allocated disk storage on one ouf our windows media server for testing dedup backups .Media server has 72G ram and 8 core processor ,4G backup nic.So can anybody let me know that should be used Media server deduplication or Client Dedup for vmware backups.....?
Have read somewhere that NetBackup Client Deduplication is a solution for Virtual machine backups but not able to find any docs supporting this or
any valueable points. Also on a lot of VM machines we dont have Netbackup client software installed .

Abhishek
Hello
Recently we had replaced one of drive in autoloader (2 drive). After re-configuring STU with device config wizard drive is visible but all my tape based backup jobs are queued up . It shows required media server is offline
But services are running . Did i missed anything in re-configuration?
NBU 7.5.4
Windows 2003 R2 STD master server
Windows 2008 R2 STD media server
HP Autoloader (LTO-4 2drives)
New install of a Master Server and 2 media servers using Solaris 11 Zones Netbackup 7.5.0.4
Example:
Media Server ( Media_1 ) installed on a Global Zone
Master Server ( Master_1 ) installed on the local zone which is the same physical server as Media_1
New Physical server has ( Media_2) on a Global Zone
This all works fine until you shut down the Netbackup daemons on the Media_1 server ,
Part of the ( netbackup ) shutdown script will run a ps -ea and grep for nbemm and shutdown the master servers nbemm.,
The reason is the script does not defined if the process_id is running on the local or global zone,.
In the above example the netbackup ( ps -ea | grep nbemm ) finds only process_id of nbemm and kills it
This proccess_id is actually in the local zone so it kills the masters nbemm.
Questions:
1) Do we support this example. We do state we Symantec Supports a master server is a local zone., How about a master and media server on a physical server using the global and local zones.
2) IUf this is support is there a way to change the ( netbackup ) start/stop switch so the ps -eaZ command will be used to select the correct zone when killing process ids .
Hello,
We installed 7.5.0.5 on last friday and since we have a lot of issues regarding the "Activity Monitor" which seems to be inconsistent.
Basically, we have a lot of backup jobs (more than 200) that are either queued, active or "unknown". If we look more closely to the details, we can see that the jobs are actually finished.
Also, if I check "Report/Problems" on the console we see a lot of "socket open failed" critical errors. It seems that some nbu process fail to communicate between each other.
We did not had any issue of this type before this 7.5.0.5 (we were in 7.5.0.4).
I logged a support case but it was more than 2 days ago and was supposed to be contacted 2h later.
...I don't have any answer yet.
Regards,
Hi All,
Im looking at upgrading our physical 7.1.0.4 Master Servers to 7.5.0.5 then P2V.
Our VM guys have advised against a P2V and more so to a fresh build VM, im not sure how this would be feasible as our NBU binaries are on local disk but the DB is on SAN attached disk so we could RDM to the VM. Has anyone taken this approach or stuck to P2V?
I am also using NetBackup as Application Clusters on Standalone Media Servers, which require the Master Server to be the Robot control host, so this become a problem as I cant FC the robot to the VM.........anyone had this issue?
Thanks in advance.
Jay
Hi All,
I have veritas netbackup 7.5 installed on my solaris box.
I'm able to launch the java console, but when i tried to launch Activity monitor its keep on loading and i cant see the active/inactive jobs.
This problem is resolving when i stop/start the netbackup.
How to resolve this issue Without restarting the NB?
Your response is much appreciated.
I have a Unix NBU 7.1.0.4 Master/Media server with 6 tape drives, and a windows NBU media server sharing one of those drives. The windows server is being used for VMWare backups.
Any idea how I can give priority of the shared drive to the Windows NBU Media Server? I'd like my Master/Media server to only use that device only if all other drives are unavailable.
Hi experts.
I want to know how to verify if the backup has ended in order for me to verify in the script, if the log has different errors, and also to start the database.
Also the script opens the database after the bpbkar has ended and what is happening is that bpbkar process disappear for a moment and then appears back to continue to backup the database but the database has already been opened after not seeing the bpbkar process for a while.
while ps -ef|grep -w "[b]pbkar"
do
echo "Backup in progress...Waiting!" >> $LOGFILE
sleep 30
done
Friends,
given up on fixing disk pool volume down issue after spending whole morning.. this is the typical one..
nbdevquery and nbdevconfig works successfully.. you can inventory the disk pool from.. you can see the storage configuration properties under credentials tab.. disk pool stays alive less than 10secs and it goes down.. here is the spoold logs from that path.
gsrugnbapp01:/dedup_data/log/spad/gsrugnbapp01.groupservices.co.uk/spoold/spad
number of errors being reported of connection reset by peer.. i can bet my brand new BMW 325D on this.. the name resolution/nslookup and everything working okay.. no problem.. this problem arose over the weeked due where the media server (built in storage) went offline in the middle of the backup due to unexpected power outage.. looking at the logs below its suggesting connection reset by peer; REceive session shutdown
any suggestion will highly be appreciated.

Is there any way of performing Daily Incremental and then Weekly Full backups within the same SQL backups policy.
From past experience I would say no, but am being challenged and starting to doubt myself :-)
So would be good to get some re-assurance.
Hope you can help
Cheers

The customer is adding more hosts to the backup schedule which is starting to slow things down a bit. I will have to start multiplex / multistream jobs in order to complete backups in the windows I have been given. I have seen where you can over multiplex / multistream and actually hurt performance.
I have standardized retention to diff's 3 weeks, fulls 3 months and monthly fulls 1 year on all jobs. Based on the current setup what would be a middle ground to use on multiplex / multistream?
Dear Team
As I am new to NBU I have isue where a policy which is stuck and not progressing from more that 15 hrs it is continuosly in ACTIVE state.

Hi ALL,
Master Server OS - win 2008 r2, NBU version - 7.5.0.4
There is a windows 2003 machine whose location E:\3365 has been mapped Network drive on master server name as 336x(\\gffs03)(Z:). 3365 folder contains the 5 mounted partitions and 6 folders. Now when we check those mounted partitions from Z: drive, its seen as shortcut link (please check the screenshot). Type of this shortcut is mentioned as "Provided Volume". Now when we try to backup the Z: drive, all the folders get backedup except the partitions.
When we try to backup up the specific partitions by mentioning the path in selection list, the job fails with status 71
In Policy attribute - cross mounts and backed network drive option are checked.
Now i want to know whether this type of backup is allowed by Netbackup. If yes then what can be the solution. if no then why??
We have find the workaround as if we mentioned the UNC path containing the name of all the folders and reached till the file location, only then backup is successful. But the mounted partition contains many folder which is not possible to mention every folder path in selection list.
Please find the attachment of screenshot and bpbkar logs
Has anyone developed a standard evaluation process or a list/document that will help to insure we have valid backup data (tape or replicated) - for a specific system.
What is the criteria(s) for what qualifies as a successful test? Currently a way I validate a backup is to perform a restore of a previously selected date, what else should/could I be doing? And how? Any information or guidence is greatly appreciated. Any industry standards out here I could look up on this one?
Hi All,
We are doing oracle agent based backups and to backup multiple Oracle instances on a same host we have to create a seperate script for each
instance and a seperate policy for each instance.
Is it possible if we can backup all Oracle instances using one policy and this can be achieved from one RMAN script ...?
As in the rman script we mention only one Oracle SID , if somehow we can mention multiple SID.
Please if you can suggest a solution /workaround for this as creating new policy for each instance will increase the number of policies.
Regards,
Abhishek
