Do Backup's of VM's on VMware with NetBackup 7.0 require a Windows server?
We currently have only Linux servers. I have tried to configure NetBackup to make VMware back-ups the last time, but I stumbled on multiple errors. One of which that mentioned a Windows-based proxy.
Later I was searching on the internet and spent more time reading documentation and I read that a Windows-based proxy is or used to be needed.
- Can somebody tell me when NetBackup requires a Windows-based proxy?
- Do I need one with NetBackup 7.0 on CentOS?

Please send me the steps to send logs to symantec site
Hi ALL,
Please send me the comlpete steps to send logs to symantec engineer
Run nbcplogs from any NetBackup server or client to upload logs
What this does: it copies logs to a temporary location, adds the logs to a tarball, compresses the tarball, then uploads the compressed tar-ball
The only requirement is to pass a destination argument on the command line. examples where Titan case number is 123-123-123
nbcplogs -f 123-123-123
nbcplogs /tmp/logs
Then what after the above steps. My logs are under /tmp/logs.
cd /tmp/logs
Then what?
Media server IP change
Hey all,
I wanted to propose a quick question to you all regarding changing the IP address of a media server. I understand that the hostname is an integrated variable in the Netbackup process and I understand that I will not be changing that without having to rebuild the media server. I wanted to see if there would be any harm if I simply changed the IP address? I understand also that all of the client hosts files will need to be updated accordingly as well as the master and any other media server that may need to contact it. Is there any problems with this approach?
Just trying to see if I should just end up decomissioning it and making a new one.
nbpemreq
nbpemreq -suspend_scheduling will susped all scheduling.. so that there will not be new jobs comming and submitting to the nbjm...all active and queued jobs will run.. but no new scheduled jobs..
nbpemreq -resume_scheduling will bring nbpem to regural work after suspending... so that it can submit the jobs to nbjm....new jobs will comming in as per the schedule..
bprdreq -terminate .. will terminate the bprd process.. so that you can not start any restore , manual backups and user /client iniciated jobs.. ..because bprd is the one who recives all this requests..
hope this helps..
This is from Nagallas OP
My Question is:
How to suspend active jobs, because we are plainning to restart the netbackup or Server, And I dont want all jobs to be cancelled,
and how to make them again active after restart
Nagallas OP sorry for the previous incomplete forum...
Socket write failed
Hi all,
We are using Netbackup 6.5.6 on a Linux server (Red Hat 5.8). We are attempting to restore files located on a tape from another environment. I was able to catalog the tape without issues. However when I try to restore any files I receive the following error.
Error bptm (pid=1321) cannot write data to socket, Connection reset by peer
Error bptm (pid=1321 The following files/folders were not restored:
Error bptm (pid=1321) UTF - /F/{file_name}
restored from image {tape_name}; retore time: 0:00:49
Error bpbrm (pid=1300) client restore EXIT STATUS 24: socket write failed
end Restore; elapsed time 0:00:51
the restore failed to recover the requested files (5)
We have attempted restoring to filer volumes and Linux servers with the same results. The data on the tape appears using the MS-Windows-NT Policy. Any assistance would be welcomed.
Netbackup 7.5 SANFiler Restore to Windows Server
I'm having an issue trying to do a restore using Netbackup 7.5 from a SANFiler to a Windows Server using policy type NDMP. When I try to change the destination of the restore by default it wants to use the original location which uses a UNIX type file structure, I want to restore it to a Windows server, but I get "Invalid Path" every time, does anyone know how to do this kind of restore? or can it be done?
slow backup speed
Hi Experts ,
We have two wan servers takes much time to complete.
when we have verified with network team they have confirmed there was no issues with network speed.
Kindly let me know what do i test from my end to check the possibilities to lowering the backup speed.
When cerified in netbackup detail log i see speed is:160 kb/sec.
better user management and control
hi,
please help me out:
I modified the auth.conf to specify access to certain users.
I used the following parameters below to limit a user to do restore and monitoring only.
root ADMIN=ALL JBP=ALL
* ADMIN=JBP JBP=ENDUSER+BU+ARC
restore ADMIN=AM+DM+BAR
I would like to know if I can restrict the user further to restore on specified clients only. If so, please share the procedure.
thanks,
Netbackup 7.1 on VCS 6.0
Hi,
We have installed a new Netbackup Master 7.1 in a two node VCS 6.0 cluster on a Solaris 10 T4 Server.
Our Existing clients are talking to a 6.5.4 Master. We are planning to shutdown the 6.5.4 master and powerup the 7.1 Master Server.
My query here is do we need to update all the NBU Clients host file with the physical cluster hostnames and IP addresses?

Stuck creating BMR SRT
Hi All,
I'm stuck creating a shared resource tree for bare metal recovery in NetBackup 7.5(.0.4).
I only have one bundle of files available for installation, but it is asking specifically for the Client install. I didn't see any other files available on the site. The client installation files should be included in this bundle. Is there a certain trick to this that I am not seeing, or did I miss something else?
Thanks!

Operation Status Error (-1) for SQL Backups
We have a Windows 2008 client for which we have configured SQL backups. The backups appear to be completing successfully (status 0 in the NBU admin console) and the SQL DBA is showing successful backups at the database level. The issue that the DBA is seeing is on the client side when he views the status of the SQL backups in the NBU client, they mostly show the Operation Type as Unknown, and the Operation Status as Error (-1) (see attached). Is this an aberration, or is there an actual issue with the SQL backups for this client? What logs would I need to collect for troubleshooting?
Master: NBU 7.5.0.4 running on SunOS 5.10
Media: NBU 7.5.0.4 running on Windows 2008 Server
Client: Windows 2008 Server running SQL 2008 Server and NBU client 7.1
Thanks,
Wayne

Netbackup and 3PAR
I'm looking to use NBU 7.5 to handle our VM backups in our infrastructure which uses 3PAR F400 for storage. I've checked the compat lists and it looks like some elements are compatible but some are not. Can anyone offer advice on this if they are either currently using this setup or have came across this before?
The infrastructure is all W2K200x and we would be looking to do integrated backups of Exchange and Sharepoint as well as the usual file data.
Thanks.
Active Tapes are sitting idle for two months
Hi,
Environment:
Master & Media Server - Windows 2008 R2
NetBackup Verison - 7.5.0.4
HP Ultrium 5 Tape Drive - 8
We have created 3 Policy with different Storage Unit with same Volume Pool with Infinity Rentention.
I have 5 - 8 Active MPX tapes in a specific volume pool at a Infinity retention level. Two Active MPX tapes are in half written state that are sitting idle for two months
while other tapes get written to and new tapes are brought into the pool. Even though we have half written active tapes the new tapes are brought in instead of using active tapes.
I freeze all the active MPX tapes except the old Half Wriiten Active MPX tapes. After I trigger the policy it taking the old half written tapes. But why it does not taking the old tapes when all the tapes are in Active even though we have enough space.
Already we have enabled the "Enable Unrestricted Media Sharing for All Media Servers." in Master Server Host Properties.
Maximum numberof partially full media property - 0
Any finding and fine tune may helpful?
The tape device at index -1 has a maximum block size of 65536 bytes, a buffer size of 262144 cannot be used
I am reaching out to the community because I have been searching for the answer to this for 2 days now and I cannot find anything that will work, including talking to support... Here is the situation:
I am at a customer site, the have a FalconStor VTL and an old STK library with 4 LTO3 drives. They were not using the FalconStor as we were going to be moving them to new hardware and it was going to be hooked up to that.
So we moved the 6.5.4 DB over to the new IBM hardware and upgraded them to 7.5.0.4. No problem, 8 VTL Tapes are attached and working just fine for backups. It's when I went to vault the stuff from VTL to PTL where the issue arose. I get the error in the title everytime I try to vault tapes or even back up to the physical tape drive. Now, that being said, they used the 256k buffer setting on their old server for literally YEARS, with no issue. Now that it is on the new hardware it will NOT write to physical tape with those settings. It continually says that it can only do 64k.
I have tried changing the settings in the registry for the Adaptec 320 card, even though they were set to 41,65 (which is 256k), I updated them to ff (max settings) no change, drive can only do 64k buffer.
If i change the SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS to 64k, it works like a champ.. a very old and slow champ, and this slows down their backups to the VTL substantially.
I installed new IBM LTO3 drivers, I used MS drivers, same thing.
I used the MS Adaptec 320 drivers, and updated them to the latest, same thing.
There were new Adaptec 320 cards in the system, we replaced them with the old cards from the old server, same thing.
There is obviously SOMETHING telling windows and/or NetBackup that this drive can only do 64k buffer size. But I cannot for the life of me find WHERE that setting is and why it is there.
Hard/Software Information:
(2) IBM System X 3650M4 Servers, Running Windows 2k8 R2 Standard - 1 Master 1 Media
STK L80 tape library with 4 LTO3 tape drives attached with Adaptec Ultra320 Cards
Master - Netbackup 7.5.0.4 upgraded from 6.5.4. Media - Fresh install of 7.5 then patched to .0.4.
Jobs running on the Media server behave the same as the jobs running on the Master.
If anyone has any ideas, PLEASE let me know. This is driving me nuts.
