Cummulative Differential Backup on SAN greater than Full Backup

I need a solution

Hi to everyone

Our environement is Solaris Sparc 64bit with Netbackup 7.0.1 on SunOS 5.0 (Solaris 10)

Since short time we use a VNC SAN  and want to change our Backup-Window from Daily-Full-Backups to a Rotation of Full-Backups and Cummulative-Incremental Backups.

When I controlled the first Backup-Sets, i was very shocked. The Cummulative-Incremental Backups needs not only more than twice the time as the Full Backup; they also save more than double the amount of data.

Is this a normal behaviour for a san-backup ?

As in my understanding, a Cummulative-Incremental Backup retains the differences between the last Full-Backup and the Next-Full-Backup and grows from Backup-Set to Backup-Set. But, within a Backup-Set, there ist an Automatic End. The Backup did not catch unlimited any new open files on the SAN.

Thanks for your Help

Thomas

Enterprise Disk License

I need a solution

What is the Enterprise disk license used for ?

I'm asking this question because I want to know why do I need that license because if the VTL will appear to my windows system in the end as a tape library so why do I need a license ? or this license is to make the netbackup aware that this is a disk so that the backup operation will be just faster ?? or this is wrong and the VTL without this option will not work at all ??

I'm trying to find any document about the license but I failed to reach any

Thanks & Best Regards,

Differential Backup of Window x86 (2003System) Hangup after 16 min

I need a solution

Hi to everyone

Our environement is Solaris Sparc 64bit with Netbackup 7.0.1 on SunOS 5.0 (Solaris 10)  with a Windows 2003  x86 Web Client

Policy is  BMR activated with two Shedules :

1th  Full -Backup

2nd Cummulative Incr Backup

The 1th Shedule runs without Probems and returns no Failure-Code on both Parts of the Backup-Job.

The 2nd Shedule succeded for the part of BMR; but after 16 minutes, the main Job for the Backup of the Directories and Files failed with a Network-Timeout.

Self a change in the Client-Settings in Netbackup could not change this Behaviour.

I know that the windows system did not have plenty of space. By this, i had expected, that the full-backups will make problems and not the differentiells.

Is there a missing or damaged file on the system ?

Many thanks for any help

Thomas

Restore - no entity found

I need a solution

Morning all,

I'm trying to restore a few items but we're getting the error "no entity found" while browsing within the Java BAR console.

If I try to do the same within the Windows console on the master server directly, I can see all the folders and files without issue.

The Master server is running 7.5.0.1 (Java installed as well) as is my PC.

I can navigate some of the folders with the Java console but then get the "no entity found" error on other folders.

If I try to navigate the same folders which gave me the error but this time directly from the master server it then shows them and even allows me to drill down further.

I loged onto the master server with the same credentails as I do with the Java console on my PC.

Obviously as I can access the master server and restore from there it's not a mojor problem but we have a team which run with restore requests and they wouldn't have direct access to the master server, leaving them with no option but to use the JAVA console and therefore no way to restore these files.

Has anyone seen anything like this before ?

Kevin

Netbackup for SharePoint 2013?

I need a solution

Hello,

I'm working with a client who's using Netbackup 7.5, and they're looking at implementing SharePoint 2013.  Does Netbackup 7.5 currently support SharePoint 2013, or is there a roadmap that gives a general idea of when SharePoint 2013 will be supported by Netbackup (7.5 or later)?

Thanks!

I need a solution

Hello,

I have a question regarding Symantec NetBackup command line interface.

I'm trying to work with command line only from the master server host (no Admin Console is available!!).

My problem: when I use "bpbackup" command, no 'job id' is returned, so it is problematic for me to track the parent job that is created (for getting logs, aborting it etc.)

I tried to use the pid (proc id) that is shown in the log file (when running bpbackup with -L option) and then parse the bpdbjobs -all_columns output). This may work, but I noticed that the -L output is missing the pid in case it is ran from master server.

Then I tried to see if there is a way to insert some kind of description to the backup instance. I noticed that there is a -k option to set keyword (for later restore). However, the keyward phrase is not presented in the active environment (bpdbjobs).

Does anyone has an idea/tip/trick how can I retrieve the parent job id(/job id) of a backup execution command without the GUI?

Thanks,

Avner

Hi

I would like to get some suggestion about backing up the client which can be reached only through bastion host. The netbackup server has to login to bastion host to reach the client.

Server OS - Redhat 6.2

Client OS - centos 6.2

Adding a VMware rule for client selection to an existing policy by command line?

Anybody tried adding a VMware rule for client selection to an existing policy by the command line?

In the NBU 7.5 Commands Reference Guide there is appears to be now way of adding  VMware selection of clients using rules.  The command bpplclients normally handles this but doesn't look like it has this ability nor does any other command.

It should be a simple procedure because you can create a policy with a selection rule(s) and use that as an example and edit as required.

Automate Media Unfreeze

I need a solution

Hi All,

I am thinking of automating Media Unfreeze in our environment. There are couple of questions regarding this.

1. "/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/goodies/available_media | grep -i FROZEN" will give the forzen tapes. But this command is taking long time to complete. In our environment its taking around 20 minutes. Is it normally works this way? If yes, is there any other command which gives me the frozen medias?

2. What is the best way to find the media host of a particular media? "bpmedialist -m <media_id>" is not helping. Because in our environment some media are allocated to Server Group. Hence for some media, instead of "Server Host" output, I get "Server Group" output in bpmedialist command?

Will "bpmedia -unfreeze -m <media_id> -h <Server Group> works? or only "Server Host" will work? If the second is the answer, what is the other command to find the media host?

My Master Server : HP-UX 11.31

Netbackup Version: 7.1

I know instead of these, GUI or from Opscenter, it is easy to unfreeze media. But I would like to know if an automation with out any manual interaction is possible. Thanks in advance for your inputs. :)

Netbackup Accelerators Track Log

I need a solution

Hi,

Netbackup Accelerator is excellent - we are using it along with some 5220 appliances and Netbackup 7.5 - but I do have a question about the way it works.

This rather good document covers a lot of the technical details: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

However, one bit of information that is missed out is exactly what data about the filesystem is stored in the track log, and how the track log is compared against the filesystem so quickly.  Does it use the same techniques on ext3 and NTFS for example?

Thank you if you have any information on this.  This question arises more out of curiosity than necessity.

Chris.

Backup of Sharepoint server

I need a solution

Hello

Our Sharepoint Systems consist of  1 portal and 1 database( SQL2008)  server.

Can we use Netbackup agent for SQL to backup the database of the Sharepoint System?

Or we must use only the NBU agent for sharepoint to backup the sharepoint system.

The result of recovery is same or not.  I think the agent for sharepoint is a step more complex  (more error) than SQL

Thank you.

I need a solution

I have loaded NetBackup 7.5.0.3 on two TeleCom servers which have AntiVirus disabled.  But The NB Client Services will not start up.

I am able to ping the NB Master Server; Tried "Log OnAs" both with a Domain Account and Local Service.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank you,

~Keith

I need a solution

I have a Master Server connected to a SL500 Library and a Media server connected to a storage unit with a staging schedule.

Everything's running fine till a created a storage unit to my Master sever. I created it with a staging schedule and 2 days afters I've got this error :

Its look like that my second storage unit attached to my Master server has created a conflic with the media server...

I removed the storage unit on my Master server, I rebooted the 2 servers and everything is ok...no more error.

Can we have a storage unit on the master server and media server? does I need more licences? I really dont know why I've got this issue...

thanks for your help
