I need a solution

I am running Netbackup 7.5.0.5 on Windows 2008 R2 (migrated from hp-ux) and have a slight issue. Due to security restrictions we are not allowed to use BLAT for sending emails. Does anyone know how I can get vault (not enterprise vault) to send its reports via powershell instead?

We're using the canned vault reports - Is it possible to change the primary sort field? Currently sorting on Media - want it to sort on Slot ID.

BTW: Reports are generated/printed when our vault jobs run. I want to keep it automated, just need the reports sorted differently.

Hello ,

I have a Master server running 7.5.0.6 is DMZ . I am trying to  run the Java gui console on my HP laptop via xwindows. I  tried using xming and cygwin-X to access the Java gui. THe Xwindows is working fine.

The way I use is I login thru putty session to a linux box and than run ssh -X to the Master server running on SOlaris to DMZ and from DMZ master server I run jbpSA th ejaav gui console gets displayed when I login it  opens with user level permissions , although I  have admin level permissions defined in auth.conf file.

I tried Cygwin -X as well to login to the DMZ master server via Xterm but same result the Java gui console opens with user level permissions.

Need to find jobid triggered by bpduplicate command

I need a solution

Hi Specialists,

I need to build a script for manually duplicating backupid's from tapes to disk based storage unit. Now My plan is to find out backupid's through bpimmedia for set of media's and use bpduplicate to duplicate those backupid's to a storage unit. Now next step would be to check if the duplication job triggered by the bpduplicate complete or not, If it completed I need to expire those media's so they become scratch and I have the duplicated image promoted to as primary image. I was thinking of how to find out the jobid triggered by bpduplicate command in order to track what happened to it.

Thanks

Master server migration to new hardware

I need a solution

We are planning and testing our NBU master server (7.5.0.6 on HP-UX 11.31 IA 64, EMM and media server as well) to a new hardware with same OS.

I got a few questions somebody may help. thanks in advance.

1. we have around 600GB catalog. we are planning to run full backup in previous day, then on migration day, we will suspend backup jobs, run a incr backup. then reocver catalog from incr backup. But somehow the incr recovery failed with following. we have exactly same installation path on old and new master. same hostname but different IP.

Catalog recovery is in progress. Please wait...

ERR - Failed to find last backup image record for client mmdcux17, client_type 7, with policy Hot_Catalog_Backup and sched_type 4 (227)

Failed to recover catalog (227)

any idea?

2. during new master installation, i found under /usr/openv, there are a few files .psummary .pseq and .phistory. what are these files for? can we delete them?

3. on old and new master, we have different FS mount points. we try to origanize the FSs better. Wish these changes will not cost any issue.

old master: /usr/openv,   /usr/openv/netbackup/db

new master: /usr/opevn, /usr/openv/netbackup/db/images, /usr/openv/logs

4. we have two tape libraries configured on old master/media, one is decidated to master/media, another is shared with another media server with SSO option. afte migration, i assume we have to reconfgiure them on new master after we migrated FC zones. right?

SAP Monthly / Yearly and Multiple utl files

I need a solution

Hi there,

When we were backing up SAP using TSM, we had 4 utl files

initSID_d.utl (daily)

initSID_w.utl (Weekly

initSID_m.utl (Monthly)

initSID_y.utl (Yearly)

Each utl file specified a different storage pool in TSM. Today, I had to do a restore going back 1 year and I was successful.

However, in Netbackup, I only use one .utl file. 4 Schedules. Each schedule (daily, weekly, monthly, yearly) uses the same .utl file.

Could I potentially run into an issue when restoring Monthy / Yearly backups using the above 1 x utl file method? The schedule is not speicified in the utl and comes from netbackup during an auto run.

Folders not 'visible' for granular restore from FlashBackup-Windows policy

I need a solution

Hello Everyone!

This is the current configuration for this backup client.

Backup client:   Windows 2008 R2 x64 w/NetBackup 7.1.0.2
NetBackup:        NetBackup 7.6.0.1
Policy:                FlashBackup-Windows

The backup client has a rather large volume (D:) that is approximately 5.6TB and contains close to 40 million files.  We are backing this volume up differently than the OS volume due to it's size and content.  We are currently running a full FlashBackup-Windows job monthly, running weekly cumulatives, and daily differentials.  In attempting to restore specific files from this restore, it was noticed that while the size of the job indicates that indeed, the entire volume backed up, selecting files for a granular restore is not possible.  ***There is a single folder in the root of that volume that contains the vast majority of the 5.6TB of data.  Its named "vol" and is not listed as a folder in the FULL FlashBackup-Windows backup image from either the BAR gui on Windows machines, or the Java gui on either Windows or Linux machines.  Interestingly enough, it IS listed in the cumulative and differential INCREMENTAL backups however...***

I am attempting to set up a new, temporary client that I can restore the entire raw partition image to just to confirm that the folders are being backed up and that in a DR scenario, we would be able to recover the entire volume, however even if that is the case, granular restores will be rather cumbersome unless we can get this ironed out.  Symantec currently IS working on this as I opened a support case when I originally thought that the backup was just somehow missing that folder, but I have updated Symantec Support that it appears the "file mapping" aspect of the FlashBackup-Windows policy is failing in this particular case.  I've shared this issue with the community because we're all very good at solving complex issues, and if anyone else runs into this, it would be nice to be able to find the solution without having to jump through the Symantec Support hoops.  Once resolved, if resolved, I will certainly update this post.

To try and head off the little stuff, I will confirm that we checked and double-checked that there were no exclusion issues.  We re-created the policy from scratch to confirm that there were no policy "corruption" issues that we were running into, and the problem persists.  My guess is that it may possible be due to the folder-depth or sheer size that is causing the process to fail, but until I can do the restore test, its all conjecture.  I also know that this will be much less painful if the customer were to segment their data somewhat, and that is one of my recommendations but is something to be addressed after this 'restorability' issue is resolved.  I also have upgraded the NetBackup client to 7.6.0.1 but as it takes about 18hrs to run this particular backup, I don't know if that has resolved it yet...

I've attached screen-scrapes of the drive size and its folder contents from the Windows client, the full restore as well as the incremental restore views from BAR to help show that the 'vol' folder is not visible or selectable to restore from the full FlashBackup-Windows backup but is in the smaller incrementals.

Hopefully, someone has run across this before and can provide some insight.

Thanks all!

Pat

Two Backup jobs, two media write errors - one job resumes, one doesn't

A Tale of Two Backups

The Scene: Two backup jobs, "a" and "h", running simultaneously on client ned18 (along with three other backup jobs). Both policies have checkpointing enabled, both jobs back up the same fileserver.  Job "a" backs up the user directories beginning with "a" (one directory), and job "h" backs up the user directories beginning with "h" (three directories).

NetBackup 7.0, server and client both running Linux

Act 1: Job "a"
- Job "a" having backed up 12TB and 800K files, stops with a "1: (84) media write error"
- Select the job, click Actions -> Resume Job
- Within minutes job "a" got set up, mounted and positioned a fresh tape
- Activity monitor immediately shows the byte count and file count incrementing
- In short job "a" is back on track and has been running fine for more than 8 hours

A few hours later...

Act 2, scene 1: Job "h"
- Job "h" having backed up 15TB and 150K files, stops with a "1: (84) media write error"
- Select the job, click Actions -> Resume Job
- Within minutes job "h" got set up, mounted and positioned a fresh tape
- BUT, the activity monitor shows no activity - the byte count and file count remain unchanged for job "h"
- Three hours later the master server timed out, "Error bpbrm (pid=nnn) socket read failed: errno = 62 - Timer expired" and "file read failed  (13)"

Act 2, scene 2: Job "h" (continued)
- Undaunted, enable debug logging for bpbkar on client (touched bpbkar_path_tr, VERBOSE = 5, Debug_Database = 5, ENABLE_ROBUST_LOGGING = YES)
- Select the job, click Actions -> Resume Job
- The bpbkar log file grows very quickly, BUT in a tight loop, and recording the same 19 lines over and over
- This continued for three more hours until the master server timed out (again, "errno = 62 - Timer expired").

Act 3: Looking for a happy ending
- Don't know why "Resume Job" for job "a" worked immediately
- Don't know why "Resume Job" for job "h" didn't work
- Once job "h" was resumed, what is the bpbkar process doing?
- And don't know what to trynext
