I need a suggestion regarding schedules.  We have a NBU environment, where schedules are configured as follow.

Daily incremental, weekly cummulative incrementals (1 month), monthly full (3 monhts), Quaterly fulls (Infinity retentions). This is as per the business requirements.

Incrementals and cummulative incrementals are OK. But for the monthly and Quaterly fulls we have to maintain list of exclude and include dates.

On start of every quarter, quaterly fulls runs on those months no full backups should run. Vice versa is also true. So we have to keep populating exclude and include dates in our policies once they are exhausted.

This is how the policy schedule looks.

We have 4 master servers and more then 800 policies,  Obviously its very tedious task. I want to get rid of this thing. I have the following idea in mind.

Create a seprate set of policy only for infinity quaterly backups and remove the quaterly schedules from the regular policy.

Now setup the monthly backups like "first monday of every month".  Same should be done with the quaterly infinity policy also.

During the regular times keep the infinity policy disabled and regular policy running. Durin the quaterly month in first week specifically enable the infinity policy and disable regular policy. (This can be done using simple script)

This is far beeter then what we are following  right now. If someone have other ideas please share them.

Is it possible to repartition my existing library into 2 partitions then allow a fiber connected master server in each domain to 'own' one of the partitions and add dedicated cleaning slots?

Right now it is an just one partition, one robot and 4 tape drives.

It is my understanding that I can't just migrate the Master server to the new domain. Existing box will be retired, it is running 6.5.6, new box is current both are fiber connected.

Finally, I need to be able to back up servers from each domain every night.

I am trying to better understand the network port requirements for NetBackup 7.5/7.6.

In my environment, a firewall exists between the master server and each of my media servers.

After reading the guides, I am led to believe that the only ports needing to be opened between the master and media servers are:

TCP/1556
TCP/2821
TCP/13724
TCP/13782
TCP/13720
TCP/13783

And indeed, communication between my master and media server appears to be working OK.

What stumps me, however, is all of the firewall/connection options avaliable from the GUI...

For example, in the Media Server properties, there is a page for configuring "Port Ranges"... "These properties apply to selected master servers, media servers, indexing servers, and clients", but doesn't say anything about the ports listed above!

So what are the proper ports needing to be opened between the master and media servers?

I have an operational dedup environment supported by a Windows 2008 server doing the deduping. The media server is currently deduping virtual machines in their own policy. I want to add more servers to the dedup environment but i cant find documentation on how to do this. Can anyone help?

Client : Solaris 10. / NBU 7.5.0.6

Requirement : Need to start 2nd Policy after completion of 1st policy.

I m using bpstart_notify and  bpend_notify for 1st policy. Thinking of putting bpbackup in bpend_notify of 1st policy.

But when i m testing the bpbackup command on client it is giving me error 237.

Command : /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bpbackup -p 2nd_Policy -s User Backup -S MASTER SERVER /oracle/123/oraarch.

Need to know what exactly needs to be configured in this 2nd_policy, so that once the bpend of 1st policy calls it then 2nd_policy should be triggered.

Currently the policy is having in Attributes...policy type : standard, policy storage is defined, policy volume is defined.

Schedules is having User Backup as type,retention period defined and Media Multiplexing defined. Do i have to put nything in Start Window mentioning the start time.

Client name is mentioned and Backup Selection is also defined what needs to be backed up.

Actually what i need to achive from this method is to backup first /oracle db (which i m putting in hot backup mode from bpstart and end backup from bpend_notify...later when the control files are generated i will trigger 2nd policy and get it) and once that is completed i want archieve logs to be backed up from the 2nd_policy.

Pls. suggest / advice the right command set / different ways for this requirement.

I'm having some issues.

When I do the restore of a exchange 2010 database to a RDB, all finish ok (with status 0), but no mailbox appear on exchange console. I can see the content when I do the access since the exchange power shell.

I would like to know is there any way I can take the Windows 2008 System State backup if I don't have sufficient space in my C: drive .

I am facing the below error message when taking the ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES backup selection for Windows server .

 Already check no issue with VSS writers all are in stable status .

When I take the backup of System state it completed without any issue , I would like to know is there any way I can take the backup of system state without Snapshot issue as there is less disk space available on my server and I cannot set the Shadow Copies limit as No Limit .

Hi,

I have got a request to expire the few copies of one NDMP volume , so I went to "backup , restore & console " , selected the copies I want to expire and took the media list from "preview media"

I have written a script to expire all these tapes with command "bpexpdate -m mediaid -d 0 -forcefully "

After executing that command , the entire backup copies of that volume are gone :(  All those medias are now ACTIVE [ They are in standalone ]

Since I have done it few hours back , can I restore the previous catalog backup and if I do it so , will I be able to get the images back ?

Also if catalog restoration is not possible , I need to depend on manually loading the each tape and import the images ???  we have got only two drives , 30 slots and there are around 188 tapes... Please help me a easy way to get all my images back [ All those medias should be changed to FULL state as earlier ]

Our one of the policy's type is standart and backup selection is as following:

If we enable the Multiplexing to write  with 5 stream, it will affect the dedup?? someone told to our guys if you enable the multiplexing than dedup will not work, so policies similar to this are working only with one stream..

We have 3 Windows 2012 Core Domain Controllers

The two with Terminal Server Licens is failing with

WRN - can't open object: System State:\Terminal Server Licensing\TSLSComponent (WIN32 -536832991: Unknown error) on the Shadow Copy Components:\ backup

And the third DC is runing without any issues

Have checked the writers which are OK and run succesfull backup of system state with the wbadmin tool

Have other seen a similar issue with the Terminal Server Licensing object ?

Can someone let me know what the best practice is? Should I create just one vmware policy and be able to backup exchange both VM and Granular (information store, individual mailboxes, windows files) with single pass or I need both vmware for VM and windows policies for Granular

Is there any document that will outline best practices?

I'm working on implementing the NetBackup fo VMware solution and I have a doubt.

Current configuration is the following:

MasterServer (running HP-UX 11.31 on network 1)

Mediaserver/Backup Host (running on Windows 2008 R2 on both networks -1 and 2)

vCenter Server (running on network 2)

The Mediaserver/Backup Host can reach any of the other two servers.

My question is:
is it neccesary that the Masterserver and the vCenter are reachable between each other? Doesn't the backup Host performs as a bridge between them?

I checked at the manual, and there is nothing on writting asking for that. Just the graphics may suggest they need to be in the same network.

Seems to be a dumb question, but I need to be sure before asking for getting any of these servers accesible from a different network.

Here is the situation:

Master server "backup1" running on Windows 2008 R2, NetBackup 7.6.0.1, no additional mediaserver. Fresh 7601 install, no upgrade

Another Masterserver "backup2" running same OS, same NBU version, one additional mediaserver.Fresh 7601 install, no upgrade

Both configured with OST-plugin to enable DDboost to one individual DataDomain system each.

Plugin from DD installed on both mediaservers.

Purpose of this was to use A.I.R from "backup1" to "backup2"

StorageServer configuration using Wizard, complete with DiskPool and STU, for both Masters.

The DD system connected to "backup1" was not configured for replication.

SInce the STU was created on both nodes, we tried with nbdevconfig -updatedp to add "replication source" for STU on "backup1" and "replication target" for STU on "backup2"

A.I.R was doing its magic.

Now I want to remove that configuration, and did this:

removed "backup2" as Trusted Master using GUI (host prop>servers on "backup1" Master)

checked with nbemmcmd -listhost to see if the change was reflected in EMM db.

For "backup2" it was ok, for "backup1" it has removed target_master, but I have a replication_host listed in nbemmcmd -listhost output, with the name of Unknown.

nbemmcmd -deletehost errors with SQL error 193, which is a generic error.

I can see in STU config that not matter recreation (delete and recreate) of the STU, it has the flag "replication source" tied to it.

How do I get rid of that Unknown Replication_host from EMM database???

Our organization (Central Bank of Bangladesh)  is a corporate client of Symantec net backup 7.5. Syamnetc offer different courses on different time schedule at different country . But we need a continious  schedule(15 or 20 days) on  symantec offered courses (i.e Symanetc Netbackup 7.5 for windows or Linux, Maintenance & Trouble shooting , Advance administration, BMR , exchange etc)

Have Symantec an opportunity to organize a  custom training plan  only for our organization at Malyasia. I've contact with Asia South region symantec via e-mail. But I can't get response about custom schedule rather than their published schedule like http://eval.symantec.com/en/SG/downloads/edu/calendar_my.pdf.

In NetBackup 7.6 using Storage Lifecycle Policies can you first backup to disk, then duplicate to tape ready for offsite collection. Then replicate the data to another site?

I have successfully done a test and can backup to disk and replicate to a remote site but I cannot duplicate as I get the following error

" Number of storage operations exceeds the maximum backup copies allowed".

How can I backup to disk, duplicate then replicate my data? also does this support synthetic full backups?

It seems I'm missing a lot of things after reading NBUAdmGuide_I and DDOSAdmGuide. I'm trying to set up AIR using DD's replication, but it is not working for me. I'm not stating that the cause of this AIR not working is on my NBU servers; I'm still searching.

Now to the details. What I have is:

- NBU7.6.0.1 Master/Media as a Source. The same for the Destination.

- DataDomains and DDBoost working properly on both sides (Source and Destination).

- Regular backup policies writing on DD1 on the source side. Also regular backup policies writing on DD2 on the destination side.

- A SLP on the source which first writes as usual and then duplicates the recently created backup image to a special DD1 DDBoost storage unit.

- A SLP on the destination which has only an import operation defined. During my tests that import operation used either the regular DD2 DDBoost storage unit and the DD2 DDBoost storage unit that is supposed to receive the replicated backup images from DD1 (by means of DataDomain replication technology).

Sympthoms:

- NBU_Source writes on DD1, both on the regular DDBoost storage unit and on the DDBoost storage unit which is defined as the source for the DataDomain replication.

- NBU_Destination doesn't even blink an eye after the duplication has been done on the Source.

OK, I'm not entirely sure that the resulting files on Source are really being duplicated to Destination (speaking about DD layer here), but, can I be sure that my configuration is right on both NBUs?

I'm going a little bit crazy with this, since Symantec's documentation seems to be more devoted to MSDP than to OpenStorage API-compliant devices.
